Pvc Vs Hypalon

Ribs are generally made with either PVC or Hypalon. Each fabric has their advantages and disadvantages. Both fabrics should be considered when making your selection. Also there are a number of different types of PVC fabric available with different grades of resistances which can affect performance and durability.

PVC fabric is known to be significantly less expensive than Hypalon. PVC is quite strong and can come in a range of different deniers 0.9mm to 1.5mm, but this still does not change the fact that it does not have the same UV resistance as Hypalon. It is proven that high quality PVC materials are capable of lasting almost as long and able to be kept in great shape if maintained.

Hypalon on the other hand is more expensive overall but will last longer and is more resistant to UV exposure and chemicals found on boats such as fuel and oils. Hypalon simply has a high resistance to a variety of environments and weather conditions, both excessive heat and cold temperatures.

Both forms of material (PVC/Hypalon) have their good and bad qualities and overall have more in common than not.

If they are maintained and kept in good condition you will have a relatively low cost amount of repairs in the lifetime of your ownership.
